ABSTRACT
This paper finds the following as significant determinants of career optimism: support from teachers through their interaction with students, support from the school through its counselling programs, contextual barriers in the form of concerns about college financing and job loss within the household, career knowledge based on awareness of job opportunities, and through seeking career information from immediate connections, teachers, school’s career services, online job portals, and career development and business seminars. Students heavily relied on their families and friends for career information. Government labor market information and career guidance are one of the least used sources of career information by students. Given these findings, this paper recommends greater coordination and collaboration between government agencies, schools, industries, and students’ families to enhance the flow of labor market information, help students make sound career choices, and stimulate students’ career optimism. Schools can act as a bridge between government and industry programs and students. Schools can also formulate programs in their career guidance services to get the parents of college students become more aware of the students’ career optimism.
