The Far Eastern University Public Policy Center (FEU PPC) continued its commitment to fostering civic dialogue and critical thinking with a brown bag discussion on misinformation and media literacy held at Café Alfredo, FEU Makati. This informal but substantive exchange gathered stakeholders from various sectors to reflect on the growing threats of disinformation and the need to strengthen media and information literacy across Philippine society.
The discussion was facilitated by FEU PPC Executive Director Julia Andrea R. Abad, who guided participants through a rich conversation on how Filipinos interact with information in the digital age — and what can be done to build a more informed and resilient public.
This latest discussion builds on the first leg of the event held in May 2025, where the FEU Public Policy Center Foundation Inc. (FPPC) hosted a roundtable discussion on the same theme at FEU Makati. That gathering brought together legal, academic, and policy experts to explore the evolving landscape of disinformation and media literacy in the country.
The May roundtable featured keynote speaker Atty. Mark Gorriceta, one of Asia’s top technology media and telecommunications lawyers, who offered an overview of the disinformation crisis and the regulatory challenges it presents. Breakout sessions were led by Atty. Gorriceta and Dr. Rachel Khan, Professor of Journalism at the University of the Philippines, focusing on policy approaches and educational strategies to strengthen media literacy.
Participants across both events emphasized the critical role of multi-stakeholder collaboration in restoring trust and accountability in the digital public sphere. Discussions highlighted the need to hold platforms accountable, promote international best practices, and integrate media literacy into both formal education and broader civic education programs.
The FEU PPC is now working on a discussion paper that will synthesize insights from these conversations and offer concrete recommendations for future action. This initiative forms part of FEU PPC’s broader advocacy of active citizenship and civic education — empowering Filipinos to navigate today’s complex information ecosystem and engage meaningfully in democratic processes.
